There are jackets you put on because the weather forecast looks a bit iffy. And then there's Zita.
A classic, short wax parka from Wellington of Bilmore, created for Danish weather, where the sun and rain, as we know, can change their minds faster than a spaniel heading through a puddle.
Zita is made from waxed cotton from the Scottish manufacturer Halley Stevensons, which gives the jacket a water-repellent and windproof surface. The fixed hood provides good protection when the wind picks up, while the short, slightly roomy fit makes it comfortable both in the countryside, along the coast, and in the city.
The two large flap pockets provide ample space for the things you want close at hand, and with the practical two-way zipper, you get good freedom of movement – even when going from the yard to the car or from a forest path to a café.
The details are as they should be on a proper country jacket: small gold-coloured snap buttons, brass zipper, and brown corduroy cuffs. Inside, you'll find a spacious zipped pocket for the more important items.
In short, Zita is a jacket with both feet firmly planted in the British country tradition – but without looking like it's been standing still since 1987.
And that's actually a pretty good quality.
